Powassan Fall Fair and Rodeo

September 2nd to 4th, 2011 in Powassan, part of beautiful Ontario’s Near North

This year is going to be especially exciting, with a new event to see!!!

This year the Powassan Fall Fair will feature the Appeliteck Rodeo, part of the Ontario Rodeo Association. The Powassan Fall Fair will be the final event of the year for the rodeo, which will give participants one last chance to collect points.

The fair will run Sept 2 to 4. and will also feature the demolition derby, heavy- and light-horse pulls and much more.

22nd Annual Traditional Pow Wow ~ N’Bisiing Anishinaabeg Bi-maadziwin

Saturday, September 3rd at 1:00pm – Sunday, September 4th at 5:00pm

Jocko Point Traditional Grounds, 22kms west of North Bay, turn south 6kms down Jocko Point Road, ON

Our theme for this year is “N’Bisiing Anishinaabeg Bi-maadziwin” and it translates to mean “The Good Life of the People of Little Water”
This years Traditional Pow Wow is about honouring the people of Nipissing First Nation.

Grounds are open Thursday for Campers and Vendors to come in and set up. Overnight Security will be on site for only Friday and Saturday

Friday 5-10pm is an Open Mike Tallent Night

Middle of summer – any events going on?

We are already August the 1st – Civic Holiday Longweekend 2011 and the big festival Summer in the Bay has wrapped up yesterday. Visitors and friends are getting ready to go back home today …. and the lucky ones are still going to enjoy a great time here at the South Shore of Lake Nipissing in their cottage at our place.

The nice breeze from the lake make the warm (or better say hot) weather feeling comfortable. The nights are cool enough for a good sleep after a full day of fun and excitement!

Now that we started August: Are there still events going on or is everything slowing down? Let’s just say that there is always something going on so close to our cottages in beautiful Ontario’s Near North. Here are two events that we’d like to mention at this time:

4th Annual Taylor Milne Fun Run
August 7
Location: Callander, ON
Family Fun Run/Walk with 2,5,and 10km routes. Run starts at 9:00 a.m. RegistrationIn person registration will take place at the Callander Park from 2 – 4 pm on Saturday and costs $20 for the 10 km, $15 for the 5 km and $10 for the 2 km. Registration will be available the morning of the race from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m.

Piebird Picnic
August 7
Location: Piebird, Nipissing Village
The third annual Piebird Picnic and Garden Concert — with the wonderful band ‘Lake of Stew’ — fun for the whole family in a peaceful country atmosphere. Bring your friends and a picnic blanket and enjoy a perfect summer afternoon!

Mattawa’s biggest party is back! Starting today!

Mattawa Voyageur Days are back for a 14th year — starting today!

There’s fun in the sun at Mattawa Island, including monster volleyball and air bounce. From 5 to 7pm, there’s the kids fishing derby followed by the Evening with the Stars. That involves local and regional musical groups taking to stage at Explorer’s Point. Weekend wristbands have been sold out for months, but there’s some daily wristbands left for Friday and Sunday’s concerts.

Meantime, helicopter rides, kids zone, crafter’s corner and the voyageur market on Main Street are taking place daily all weekend long. For a fourth year in a row, Voyageur Days has been named one of the top 100 festivals and events in Ontario.

Overall the community is really involved in the festival and they’re ready to welcome everyone to Mattawa this weekend.

Due to the extreme temperatures and humidity we are currently experiencing, the City is offering ‘Cooling Centres.’ Anyone who may not have access to a place to cool down and get out of the heat is encouraged to attend one of the following locations in the City.

• The North Bay Public Library, 271 Worthington Street East,

• Pete Palangio Arena, 603 Wallace Rd

• The North Bay Mall, 600 Lakeshore Drive.

• Northgate Shopping Centre, 1500 Fisher St,

Alternative is to enjoy the day in the shade at the beach with lots of fluid and a swim in the lake here at the South Bay of Lake Nipissing. Our guests are just doing this and are so glad not to be in the City where they live right now …..

Put the paddle to the water: Mattawa River Canoe Race

For the past three decades, canoeing enthusiasts have paddled the historical waterways of the Mattawa River in the hopes of becoming a category champion in the NBMCA’s annual Mattawa River Canoe Race.

Attracting paddlers from across North America, the one-day race on July 23rd traces 64 kilometers of calm lakes, portages, challenging rapids and beautiful provincial parks to end at the mouth of the Mattawa and Ottawa River.

The Mattawa River Canoe Race’s overall record for the fastest time was set in 1995 and stands at an impressive 5 hours, 27 minutes and 53 seconds.

The hot and humid days of summer are here – and it must be uncomfortable in the cities in Southern Ontario! Yes, you have air conditioner running overtime to keep you cool but nothing beats the little breeze coming from Lake Nipissing while enjoying the beach at Rockview Camp. Once again Sturgeon Falls in Ontario’s Near North will host a rockin’ and hoppin’ good time with step dancing, fiddle contests and fun for all ages.
